Scholarly Interest:
As Director of Medical Education for the AAFP, I am responsible for all initiatives and projects related to student interest in primary care and family medicine predoctoral and postgraduate medical education programs. I staff the Commission on Education and multiple Academy task forces. My other primary responsibilities include legislative advocacy for GME funding, educational liaisons with other organizations and agencies, and policies related to the physician workforce.

Before coming to the AAFP, I began service with the National Health Service Corps, and spent over 20 years as a residency director in multiple settings. I have directed a trauma center, a health plan, and worked as a vice president for Catholic Healthcare West, the largest integrated health care system in the western states. I am the founding chair of the National Institute for Program Director Development. I have served on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and multiple organizational boards of directors.

My personal priority in medical education is the support of graduate medical education, including professional leadership development and the maintenance of training programs as integral to the U.S. health care “safety net”.
