I began my professional work as a nurse, and I continue to hold a cross-appointment in Dalhousie University School of Nursing. Upon completion of my doctoral degree, I joined the medical school faculty in 1986. Since that time, I have held positions of as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education and Student Affairs (1990-1998, 2008), Assistant Dean for Research in Continuing Medical Education (until 1994), and founding  Director of a Medical Education Unit (1995-2006). I am currently a Professor in the Division of Medical Education which provides educational and research development support to undergraduate, post graduate, and continuing medical education.
I am also a Professor at the Medical School, University of Manchester, in the UK, where I hold a part-time Chair in Medical Education

Scholarly Interest:
The majority of my teaching is faculty development, including a full program of offerings for our faculty.and consulting at other universities. In 2000, our Division began an M.A/M.Ed program with a concentration in Medical Education . I've participated in program development , and in teaching and supervision of the more than 40 faculty enrolled. In 2004, we developed and offered a 4 week elective in medical education for residents. I am currently involved in dveleoping  a program for medical and health professions research in our Faculty, and providing assistance and Faculty development activities to build capacity and support educational research. My research has involved many aspects of medical education, including the effect of curriculum change, evaluation strategies, effective strategies for changing physician practice, and  role modelling . Currently, I am involved in projects addressing  implementation of a multisource feedback assessment process with practicing physicians, and have just completed a project in interprofessional education. I am interested in reflective practice and have studied in this area, including a Harvard Macy Fellowship. Recently, with some colleagues, we have published a review of the literature in this area in health professions education.I am also involved with an international group of colleagues in a research program to study self assessment.
