Scholarly Interest:
Steve has been Chairman of Council of the Royal College of General Practitioners since November 2007, leading the UK's largest medical royal college of 39,000 members through a period of upheaval in the National Health Service. The role of Chairman is a nationally elected postion with a three year term. Most of the time seems to be spent on politics rather than education!
His previous roles in the college include leading the introduction of the first national curriculum for GP training in 2007 and as Chair of the Professional Development Board laying the foundations for revalidation of GPs.
He is on secondment to the Royal College from NHS WestMidlands where he is Head of Workforce and Regional Postgraduate Dean. He is also honorary professor in medical education at the University of Warwick and in the School of Medicine at the University of Birmingham.
In 2010, Steve was appointed by the Deaprtment of Health and the Cabinet Office of the Government to be Chairman of the National Inclusivity Board which aims to improve the health of disadvantaged groups across the country.
In 2010, Steve was honoured by the Queen, being appointed to be Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to medicine and health care.
Despite all of this he continues to practise as a general practitioner at Bellevue Medical Centre in a deprived part of inner city Birmingham.

Personal Background:
Steve was born and grew up in the Black Country in the West Midlands of England, UK. He remains an enthusiastic but often disappointed fan of our local football team, West Bromwich Albion. He is happily married to Lynn, who is nurse director of the regional Cancer Commissioning Network. They have beautiful twin daughters, Alice and Helen aged 15 and a lively flat coated retriever called Hattie.
