Education and Professional Experience:
Graduated Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB) University of Dundee 1973 and commenced training as a surgeon. Obtained FRCS(Eng) in 1978, and entered a 2 year period of full time clinical research in 1979. Awarded Mastership in Surgery (ChM) in 1983.
Held Fulbright Scholarship 1983/4 at Albany Medical College, NY and was appointed Senior Lecturer in Surgery and Consultant Surgeon to University of Wales College of Medicine (now part of Cardiff University) in 1985.
Awarded Winston Churchill Fellowship in 1989 to visit Leiden University, The Netherlands, and subsequently became Boerhaave Guest Professor in Leiden in 1992.
Awarded MBA (Open University) in 1993. Appointed sub-Dean for Postgraduate Medical Education in Cardiff in 1993, first becoming Reader in 1998 and subsequently awarded personal Chair in 2004. As Vice Dean was responsible for the commissioning and quality assurance of education and training for 2600 trainees throughout Wales.
Following retirement in September 2009, now provides professional advice on medical education and medical revalidation to Department of Health, Welsh Assembly Government, responsible to Chief Medical Officer (Wales).
In October 2009 was appointed Independent Member (Community) on Cardiff and Vale University Local Health Board (uLHB), which is responsible for the provision of community, mental, primary, secondary and tertiary care to the population of Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Chair of the Workforce and Organisational Development Committee, Vice Chair of the Audit and Governance Committee of Cardiff and Vale uLHB.

Scholarly Interest:
As a clinician maintained an active interest in research and audit as part of my continuing professional development.
As an educator received EU TEMPUS grants which supported the establishment of a distance learning medical education satellite network in Europe for 9 years.
Participated in the establishment of a clinical skills centre in Uzbekistan supported by the EU.
Presented on medical education topics to AMEE and Ozzawa 13.
Provided teaching support to MSc in Medical Education and chaired the Academic Board for the MSc Med Ed.
Presented to national and international meetings and published on both clinical and academic topics in peer reviewed journals.
Chair of the Clinical Advisory Board of the 7th EU Framework Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) Network of Excellence

 

Personal Background:
Born in Windsor, Berkshire and educated at the Licensed Victuallers’ School and University of Dundee. Trained as a surgeon with a special interest in colorectal surgery.
Developed current roles and responsibilities following a review of postgraduate medical education in Wales. Now working with Welsh Assembly Government and other UK Health Departments on medical eduaction issues.
In spare time is a keen traveller, both short and long haul, and enjoys the relaxation of long distance train journeys, including the Ghan and Indian Pacific in Australia, the Eastern and Oriental Express in South East Asia, the Blue Train in Africa and the Canadian
