Education and Professional Experience:
Thomas R. Viggiano, M.D., M.Ed. is Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in Mayo Medical School, Professor of Medicine and Barbara Woodward Lips Professor in the College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic. Dr. Viggiano received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic. He also holds a Master’s degree in Adult Education from the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Viggiano currently coordinates Mayo’s Faculty Development Program and chairs the Mayo Clinic Education Innovation Award, a program that provides developmental funding for medical education research projects (Academic Medicine. 2000; 75: 940-943). He serves as Director for Mayo Clinic's Office of Education Innovation and Scholarship.

Personal Background:
Dr. Viggiano has won numerous Teacher of the Year awards. He has played a major role in the design, integration, and administration of the medical school’s curriculum, and he developed a curriculum evaluation system based on quality improvement principles. Dr. Viggiano served as chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Faculty Affairs Planning Committee and was instrumental in the AAMC instituting a formal Group on Faculty Affairs in 2006. He also served as a member of the Program Committee for the AAMC’s Group on Educational Affairs Scholarship Project. Dr. Viggiano serves as a site visitor for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and he is a member of the Institute for Health Care Improvement Collaborative on Medical Education. He has served as head of the Research in Medical Education section for the AAMC Central Group on Educational Affairs, and he has served on two task forces for the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). Dr. Viggiano has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) and to the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. He has been a recipient of the American College of Gastroenterology Clinical Scholar Award and was named a Medical Education Laureate of the Association of American Medical Colleges Central Group on Educational Affairs.
