Scholarly Interest:
I am a molecular biologist interested in understanding the signal pathways which commit mammalian cells to another round of cell division. Early in my time at FSU, it was my fate to become interested in and involved in medical education. I first became involved in teaching of biochemistry to medical students in FSU’s Program in Medical Sciences, then in the admission of medical students, and later as the director of the Program in which 30 students completed the first year of medical education at FSU. I became a believer in the mission of this program, which in 2000 evolved into the FSU College of Medicine. My participation in the creation and development of the College has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which necessarily came before my love for bench science. In spite of 10 intense years of heavy administrative responsibilities, I have a lab group of 5 actively engaged in research. My accomplishments as a faculty member at FSU include directing the research of 7 students who earned the Ph.D. degree (the latest in December of 2008), one who earned a Masters, and 2 Ph.D. candidates currently doing dissertation research. I have also mentored 24 undergraduate researchers to date, most of whom have gone on to medical or graduate school. In the last couple of years, I have served as a consultant for developing medical schools in several states, including Florida. I am currently engaged in building the research and graduate education components of our young College of Medicine.
Personal Background:
I was born and grew up in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where (trivia note) I went to school and church with the forty-second President of the United States. I am married to a surgeon, Julian, and we have three children, a son and two daughters. I love traveling, and reading fiction. My last big international trip was to the North Island of New Zealand!
