Education and Professional Experience:
I received my BA from Rice University in economics/psychology and my MD from Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). I completed residency at UCSF and joined the faculty at BCM. I am an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Women's Comprehensive Care Center at Baylor Clinic.

I have been active in medical education across the continuum from UME to GME to CME and faculty development. My educational acitivies are currently grounded in my role as Senior Associate Dean and Director of the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education at BCM. My office oversees all the medical student educational acitivities, educational research and faculty developement. We also host our Academy of Distinguished Educators.

I have pursued my own developement as an educator by participating in BCM's 18-month Master Teachers Fellowship Program (a.k.a. Educational Scholars Fellowship Program) in 1999. In 2001, I became a member of BCM’s Academy of Distinguished Educators. In 2005, I participated in the Harvard Macy "Program for Leaders in Healthcare Education" and the AAMC's "Executive Developemnt Seminar for Associate Deans and Department Chairs".

Most recently (2009) I completed a certificate course sponsored by Rice University's Jones School of Management "Certificate in Medical and Healthcare Managment."

Each of these programs has helped me broaden my perspective on medical education and each has allowed me to bring new ideas back to our educational programs.

Scholarly Interest:
As we continue to pursue a true competency based curriculum at BCM, we are constantly forced to revisit our old assumptions. Why is time a constant in education versus competency? Should student education be embedded within resident education? What should a graduate know to move on to GME? How do we measure educational outcomes? How much should we focus on discrimminating amonst the top of our class verus making sure each graduate on the low end of performance is competent to have an MD degree?

My current interest to implementing a truely competency based curriculum where time is not a constant.

Personal Background:
I have a wonderful life. A loving family and a great career. I, like most, struggle to find enough hours in the day to do all the things I want to do.

My interests are travel (I will leave this course and go directly to Ireland), cooking, my urban garden, our Koi pond and scuba diving. I am active in the UGME section of the GEA, the board of Texas Women in Higher Education and our local YMCA. Most of all, I love watching my 7 year old daughter grow and learn about the world.

My participation in the Harvard Macy course in 2005 was a transforming experiences. I look forward to participating this year.
