Education and Professional Experience:
Dr. Shah serves as associate dean for professional development in medical education at Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. In addition to other institutional roles, she is a professor of pathology and serves as chief for the pathology academic section.
Dr. Shah is founding chair of the school’s Academy of Medical Educators. Designed as a beacon to recognize passionate teachers and promote their future growth, this faculty development initiative is in its fourth year. Through survey responses, participating faculty members say the academy’s activities both energized and educated them.
She is experienced in designing, developing and implementing platforms to help medical school faculty excel in academia, and she tailors those platforms to meet the specific needs of the faculty and institution. (http://musom.marshall.edu/fdp/)
Scholarly Interest:
The greatest privilege of my academic life revolves around the opportunity to build platforms for faculty to pursue excellence in academia. As associate dean for professional development in medical education, I have had the incredibly rewarding opportunity to mentor faculty members toward their goals, helping them recognize their areas of weakness and capitalize on their strengths. There is never a dull moment as I juggle the roles of administrator, leader, colleague, mentor, teacher and researcher.
I am passionately dedicated to undergraduate medical education, and I especially enjoy the challenge of strengthening medical education through educational research. An essential part of my work with faculty members is preparing them for the future challenges facing higher education: in academia it is good to be creative and effective, but also very important to be flexible and efficient in addressing changing priorities to meet the needs of the diverse audience (faculty/students) we serve.
